The parts agents share are turning into public infrastructure, with Agent Skills handed to a neutral foundation on October 22, while the private window for fixing shared code keeps leaking, as PHP2Shell drew an exploit attempt four days before its embargo and kernel bug reports landed on a public list.

Trending AI Briefing: Thursday, October 22, 2026 (afternoon ET)

The folder format that teaches coding agents how to do things now belongs to a foundation, not a company. Agent Skills moved to the Agentic AI Foundation today, NVIDIA kept shipping its agent sandbox runtime, and OpenAI's command-line client for its API drew more than 200 points on Hacker News. Shared plumbing is the pattern. The counter-pattern arrived on the same news cycle: Amazon says PHP2Shell drew an exploit attempt four days before its embargo lifted, and a batch of Linux kernel bug reports turned up on a public mailing list, apparently by accident. The more code everyone shares, the less private time anyone gets to fix it.

What's hottest in AI news right now

Anthropic donated Agent Skills to the Agentic AI Foundation on October 22. The handoff covers the standard itself, the name and logo, the GitHub organization and the agentskills.io domain; the foundation sits under the Linux Foundation and already holds MCP. Anthropic says more than 70 agent platforms have integrated the format, naming ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and VS Code, and puts the count at 1 million published skills and nearly 280 million installs. Engineers from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI and others will maintain it as individuals, with David Soria Parra and Mahesh Murag as lead maintainers. The catch is in the roadmap Anthropic has proposed: versioned releases, a formal proposal process and security guidance for people who write and install skills. None of those exist yet. The current specification has no version field for the spec or for a skill; a version only appears as an example key inside the optional metadata map. Amazon says PHP2Shell drew an exploit attempt on October 17, four days before the embargo lifted. In a post dated October 21, Amazon CISO CJ Moses writes that a MadPot honeypot (Amazon's sensor network) caught an exploit attempt from a commercial anonymization network on October 17, then multiple proof-of-concept exploits from about 02:00 UTC on October 21, twelve hours before the 14:00 UTC lift. "PHP2Shell is now being broadly exploited in the wild," the post says, though Amazon adds it is unclear whether the early attempts would have worked on real systems. Its advice is blunt: start investigations from October 17, not the disclosure date, and measure patch timelines for internet-facing systems in hours. The post climbed Hacker News this morning. Several Linux kernel vulnerability reports from Trend Micro's Zero Day Initiative landed on the public kernel mailing list, Phoronix reported on October 22, in what it calls an apparent mistake. The reports carry CVSS scores up to 9.0, including an SMB Direct remote code execution bug and a ksmbd race condition. None was patched in mainline at the time of writing, though some fixes sit in testing or -next branches, and Greg Kroah-Hartman replied to each report to question the public submission. This one rests on secondary coverage; we did not read the list archive directly. Phoronix

eMudhra said on October 22 that it will exit the global SSL/TLS certificate business. Two days after Cloudflare reported eight compromised eMudhra intermediate certificates, the Indian CA says its G1 RSA roots will keep serving customers through a transition, partners will issue free replacement certificates, and revocation services will run until every issued certificate expires or is replaced. SSL/TLS is about 1% of its global revenue, by its own figure. The honest catch: the release says no end-entity certificates were issued from the affected CAs, which is the company's account, and leaving the business does nothing for the disk-based CA bundles that agents and scripts still ship. eMudhra · Cloudflare

GitHub explained on October 21 how it is reworking Git storage for agent-scale write traffic. Engineers Eleanor White and Victoria Dye write that a copy of 99.99999% of repositories now lives in Azure, which serves about half of Git traffic, and that it is changing the write quorum to serialize only writes to the same reference instead of the whole repository. In internal testing, writes to different references saw 3 to 4x higher throughput. The post says the work is not done, and the final write design is saved for a later post. The post says "agent traffic isn't slowing down" but gives no agent share of that traffic, so the agent framing is GitHub's, not a measured figure. GitHub Blog

New tools and features worth actually trying

OpenAI CLI v1.40.2 (tagged 03:43 UTC October 22, late October 21 ET). brew install openai/tools/openai turns OpenAI's REST API into shell commands, such as openai responses create --input "Say this is a test" --model gpt-5.5, with --format json for scripts. Honest tradeoff: an @myfile.ext value in JSON input reads that local file into the request, and the README says to set OPENAI_UNTRUSTED_STDIN when piping JSON or YAML from an untrusted source. Our advice, not the README's: count anything an agent pipes in as untrusted, and keep the separate OPENAI_ADMIN_KEY out of agent environments. openai/openai-cli

skills-ref validate ./my-skill. The reference validator in the agentskills repo checks a skill folder against the spec (name rules, description length, frontmatter fields). With the standard changing hands, it is the cheapest way to find out whether your skills will survive a stricter versioned release. Honest tradeoff: it checks format, not behavior; a perfectly valid skill can still tell an agent to do something dumb. agentskills/agentskills

NVIDIA OpenShell v0.1.5 (October 20). A sandbox runtime for agents where "agents never see real credentials" and every network connection is checked against policy; openshell sandbox create --name demo after the install script. Honest tradeoff: it is a 0.1.x line with prereleases landing daily (v0.1.6-pre.3 today), Windows support runs through WSL 2 and is experimental, and the default image ships with no agent installed. NVIDIA/OpenShell

Omnara (Show HN, October 21). An Apache-2.0 platform for running managed agents yourself, with state in Postgres, sandboxes from Blaxel or Daytona, and bring-your-own keys for OpenAI or Anthropic APIs; docker compose -f compose.yaml --profile app up -d. Honest tradeoff: the README says the local defaults "are intentionally insecure," so the quickstart is a demo, not a deployment. omnara-ai/omnara

Trending AI repos on GitHub today

Read from Trendshift's daily board at about 15:15 ET; its numbers are momentum scores, not stars. Star figures below come from cache-busted shields.io reads, which round, and several are too large to reconcile with the repos' size, so treat them as rough.

  • cloudflare/security-audit-skill (#3): a skill that turns a coding agent into a six-phase security auditor with independently verified findings. Why now: back near the top of the board on the day skills got a neutral home. MIT (Cloudflare, Inc.), shields about 39k, no releases. Caveat: the README says one run finds "roughly half" of what repeated runs find, and target code only runs inside an OS-enforced sandbox.
  • morluto/rea (#5): one MCP server for reverse engineering binaries, Electron apps, .NET assemblies and websites. Why now: rea-agents-6.7.0 tagged October 18. MIT, shields reports a six-figure count we could not cross-check. Caveat: native analysis needs separately licensed Hopper, Ghidra or IDA, and the README warns of lookalike repos.
  • DietrichGebert/ponytail (#12): a "lazy senior dev" skill that pushes agents to write only the code a task needs. Why now: v5.3.2 tagged October 16. MIT. Caveat: the 53% less code figure is the author's own 39-task benchmark, and the README says to install only from the official repo or npm scope.
  • Graphify-Labs/graphify (#13): a skill that turns a folder of code, docs and papers into a persistent knowledge graph. Why now: v0.9.94 tagged today. Default branch is v8. Caveat: the README badge says Apache-2.0 and the root LICENSE is an unfilled Apache template, yet a LICENSE-MIT naming an individual sits beside it; the PyPI package is graphifyy, with two y's.
  • ifixai-ai/iFixAi (#15): a CLI that runs graded policy "inspections" against AI agents. Why now: v4.2.1 tagged October 21. Apache-2.0, shields about 33k. Caveat: telemetry is on by default and a full run costs roughly $12 to $18 in judge calls.
  • Ebony-Vinyl/dsh-our-free-model (#19): a plugin that points DeepSeek Harness at free hosted model gateways. Why now: v2.5.9 tagged today. MIT. Caveat: one channel's upstream may log prompts, another runs on the maintainers' relay keys and only unlocks after you star the repo, and the README says not to install it from npm.
  • openai/openai-cli (Hacker News, not on Trendshift): OpenAI's official CLI for its REST API. Why now: v1.40.2 tagged late October 21 ET and over 200 points on HN today. Apache-2.0 text, shields about 900 stars. Caveat: it has shipped since at least August (1.9.0 on August 26), so this is a find, not a launch.
  • NVIDIA/OpenShell (Hacker News, not on Trendshift): a policy-enforced sandbox runtime for agent fleets. Why now: v0.1.5 on October 20 and prereleases daily since. Apache-2.0 (NVIDIA), shields about 17k. Caveat: early 0.1.x APIs.

What actually matters from today's signal

Skills now sit beside MCP in a foundation that no single vendor owns. That matters less for the governance chart than for the boring consequence: a skill folder written for Claude Code is officially a portable artifact, and portable artifacts get copied, forked and installed by people who never read them. Watch three things. First, whether the versioned releases on the proposed roadmap add a spec version to SKILL.md, because today nothing in a skill says which rules it was written against. Second, the security guidance, because it is still a roadmap item while Anthropic counts nearly 280 million installs. Third, whether trending skills like security-audit-skill, ponytail and graphify start declaring compatibility and license fields, which the spec already allows and most skills skip.

The counter-signal is the clock. Amazon saw an exploit attempt against PHP2Shell four days before the embargo lifted, without knowing whether it would have worked, and the apparent ZDI slip put kernel bugs in public with no fix in mainline. Both involve old-fashioned C and PHP code, not agent code. Amazon's line still carries: "An embargo protects defenders only until someone else finds the same bug." Our read, not Amazon's: with labs now pointing agents at open-source code, expect more people to find the same bug. Pin your skills like dependencies, start incident timelines from the earliest sighting rather than the advisory, and stop treating disclosure day as day zero.

Source access notes: Vendor scan at about 15:12 ET. openai.com/news read through its RSS feed (October 22: forward-deployed engineering, Uber ChatGPT Work; nothing agent-tooling). anthropic.com/news latest is the Agent Skills donation (October 22). blog.cloudflare.com latest is a South Korea ISMS post (October 22); the WAF, php2shell and WebMCP posts from October 21 were covered this morning. blog.google listing showed no dates and nothing new for builders. github.blog/changelog latest is October 21 (gh expiring tokens, covered this morning). Hugging Face blog, Mistral (Voxtral 3 October 20, NVIDIA engineering October 21), LangChain (latest October 19) and Microsoft Foundry (latest October 19) had nothing in the window worth a slot. x.ai/news showed nothing newer than August 26. Claude Code dist-tags all point at 2.1.308, whose changelog says only general bug fixes; the npm packument time map did not come through, so no ship date and no slot. Codex changelog not fetched (JS-rendered). Hacker News read through the Algolia API for the last 36 hours. Trendshift read once at about 15:15 ET. Hugging Face papers top list is mostly GUI and world-model work with no core-beat paper. The ZDI kernel item rests on Phoronix only. Star counts from shields.io with a cache-buster; rea, ponytail and graphify return six-figure counts we could not reconcile, so the repo section avoids them. Adversarial pass (Sonnet 5.5) ran: it caught the OpenAI CLI tag date (03:43 UTC October 22 is late October 21 ET), GitHub's per-reference quorum written as shipped when the post says it is in progress, Phoronix's "apparently accidental" hardened into fact, an overstated PHP2Shell window, an unsourced agents claim and a roadmap inference, graphify's license holder and a stray "temporarily", README advice stated more strongly than the README, and the eMudhra certificate count credited to the wrong source. All corrected. Codex later caught one article-side detail that touched no briefing claim, and "HN front page" was softened to the Algolia points count in both briefing files. It could not load shields.io or HN from its sandbox.
